Review: Any Moment Is A Promising New Pilot Musical With Heart (The Scoop)
Seeing a brand-new pilot musical is always an interesting experience. The audience has never seen the show performed. They don’t know the music. The staging. Will there be dancing? Is there a band? I know I was thinking all of the above when I arrived at PIP theatre to attend Any Moment, a new musical by Bradley McCaw.
The show’s production concept is to provide a pathway into the industry for recent musical theatre graduates, and a safe space where they can continue developing whilst performing in a professional environment.
The entire show is set in Brisbane on New Year’s Eve. It opens with a character overlooking the bustling streets. They are wondering who the people are, what their life is like, and what they are doing in that moment.
As the show is performed in a song cycle format, each character files through singing a variety of songs, all of which relate to their ‘moment.’ Bradley McCaw has done an excellent job with the music and lyrics.
The phenomenal talent onstage only elevate the beauty of the lyrics. I wouldn’t expect less from a cast largely featuring recent graduates from the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre.
The powerful sound emanating into the audience, at times, gave me goosebumps, particularly in White House Down The Road, performed by Lucy Ross with backing support by the cast.
Some songs are hilarious, including Top Shelf, performed by Connor Chadwick, with clever lyrics such as, ‘if you were a meat pie, I’d be the crust.’ And My Phone, performed by Sam Henderson and Chloe Flanagan, with backing support by Croft Phillips and Niamh Cadoo-Dagley, which is a song about society’s addiction to phones. Both numbers had the audience laughing out loud.
I am unsure if the pink and green lighting used in Door Duet, performed by Sam Henderson and Connor Chadwick, was an intentional nod to Wicked or not, but it made me smile nevertheless.
Accompanied by a single piano played by musical director William Martineau, watching Any Moment made for an extremely enjoyable afternoon. It left my friend and I contemplating returning for the evening show to experience it all again.
Being a brand-new musical, it is understandable that the production theatrics were kept to a minimum, which worked in the PIP Theatre space. There were no giant sets, no lavish costumes and minimal props. Place and time were instead constructed using lighting. This minimalism allowed greater focus on the performers while sharing their character’s story.
Boundary microphones were largely effective, though offstage singing occasionally proved less clear. At times, the ensemble vocals felt slightly uneven and, on occasion, momentarily overwhelmed the leads. Even so, these minor balance issues never detracted from the clarity of the storytelling.
The message in Any Moment is powerful: that any moment in our lives, no matter how mundane, how exciting or sad, is every moment. They are all around us. We all have them, and we all share them. I guarantee this is not the last moment we will see of this entertaining, wholesome new musical.
Any Moment is presented by Bradley McCaw and ran from 21 – 24 January 2026 at PIP Theatre. 20 Park Road Milton Qld 4064.
The season has now ended.
